“The Pen Club of Japan issued a statement on its official website on July 15, stating: "We cannot sit back and watch society being destroyed. Through the Senate election, some parties, both the ruling and opposition parties, have been competing to advocate the exclusion of foreigners. And they use harsh words, treating foreigners as criminals and a burden to society, but pretending that this will make Japanese society better."
The statement continued: "Slogans that have different expressions but all make foreigners problematic are repeated, such as 'zero illegal foreigners', 'Japanese first', 'regulated foreigner policy', etc.; rumors that are inconsistent with the facts and have no basis, such as 'foreigner crimes are increasing', 'foreigners are abusing living assistance and national health insurance', and 'foreign students receive special treatment', are loudly promoted. These are all verbal violence and acts of inciting discrimination. We must never forget the history of the massacre of Koreans during the earthquake in China , etc., as such rumors and incitement will actually lead to tragedy."
"Attacks on foreigners in the name of election campaigns and full of rumors are destroying our society"
We cannot sit back and watch society being destroyed like this.
In this Senate election, some political parties, both in power and in opposition, competed to exclude foreigners. And they used harsh words to treat foreigners as criminals and nuisances to society, pretending that this would improve Japanese society.
"Zero illegal foreigners", "Japanese first", "Regulated foreigner policy", etc., although the statements are different, they all make foreigners problematic; "Foreigner crimes are increasing", "Foreigners are abusing living assistance and national health insurance", "Foreign students are treated preferentially", etc., are rumors that are inconsistent with the facts and have no basis and are constantly shouted. These are all verbal violence and acts of inciting discrimination. Such rumors and incitement to discrimination have actually led to the massacre of Koreans during the China earthquake and other tragic history, which we must never forget.
We have been working to build a multicultural society based on historical reflection, and many local governments have already enacted and implemented relevant laws for this purpose. Our democratic society, which is maturing and progressing bit by bit, must not regress or collapse because of "rumors" and "discriminatory remarks" spread by some politicians to gain temporary favor. In order to protect our democratic society, we hope that voters will stop once again, cherish and exercise their votes solemnly.”
